‘I know what you're thinking: ‘Don't tell me your school is on the beach.’ Well, it is. Our school is by the sea, on the beach.’
Sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, palm groves and mangrove forests on the Pacific coastal village of Barra de Potosí in Mexico. The schoolchildren are talking about the whales they've seen locally. Seven-year-old Dylan, who has just moved there with his family, believes he can find Sir Francis Drake's treasure. Close to the children, and utilizing documental imagery the film joins him and his new friends on an enchanting voyage of discovery that ends with a find far more precious than a pirate's lost treasure trove. An intimate glimpse into the lives of people living in this natural paradise.
Born in Mexico City in 1951, she studied film at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Her debut feature film Lola screened at the Berlinale in 1991. Her second feature Danzón premiered at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes and brought her international recognition. She has written the screenplays for all her films, three of them in collaboration with her sister. Since 2006 she has also produced her films. She claims that her three children Mara, Santiago and Lucero and her three grandchildren Andrea, Dylan and Jacinta are the most important part of her biography.
